"Preserve the white!" that was the motto that François used to teach me how to paint in watercolor. He was the father of my French Exchange, who spent a lot of time with me during the time I was in Auxerre in France, where they lived.
François Brochet was born in 1925. In 1942 the seventeen-year-old Brochet met Le Corbusier, and was influenced by Le Corbusier's doctrine: "drawing gives you true freedom".
His emphasis in drawing was in composition and mastery of line, which informed his work in carved and polychrome sculpture, Many examples of which are still in the Cathedral in Auxerre.
My sister recently found a couple of letters that I wrote home during this french exchange. I was fifteen at the time.
